Dating in the Philippines

Dating as defined in the dictionary is a form of courtship. It involves social activities undertaken by two individuals in order to know each other better. In the process, one aims to find out if the other is suitable as a partner in an intimate relationship or as a spouse. Dating also refers to the act of meeting and engaging in some mutually agreed upon social activity which normally includes watching a movie, having dinner or other forms of entertainment.

Dating may be exclusive or open or casual. Exclusive dating means that you are only dating each other. Casual dating is when you keep intimacy out of the picture thus you do not really see each other together in the long term or not really considering the other one as a possible future spouse.

In the Philippine setting, we are more inclined to go for exclusive dating which is also sometimes termed as going steady. Oftentimes, we date with the goal of finding our soulmate or our husband/wife prospect. Dating may be fun and it allows you to explore and get to know another person in a different level. Dating is when you build trust and intimacy so openness and honesty are probably among the most important things to keep in mind.

Here are some indications that you have reached a certain level of intimacy:

  • You are expected to explain your absence in case they call while you are out.
  • He/she is welcomed when he/she pays you a surprise visit
  • You keep yourself available during the weekends with the possibility of spending time with him/her
  • You spend your free time with him or her
  • You get in touch regularly and drop all your other dating prospects

Like in any other relationships, it has to be mutual.  Giving too much too early when the other party is not ready may lead to heartbreak.
